High school students ideas related to school safety: An example of Çanakkale city center

Schools are such institutions that they have great influence on all individuals? behaviours. It?s acknowledged by all that the school system has a leading role in the way people obtain knowledge and carry out their practices in society. For this reason, schools must improve their safety precautions in order to create a safe learning environment for all students.The aim of this study is to determine high school students? ideas related to school safety. For this purpose, it was studied to attain students? ideas about physical, physicological, social and environmental safety in school. It was also studied whether these ideas differed significantly according to students? gender and school type.The research is a survey. The universe of study consists high school students and the sample was constituted by seperating the universe of study into two different groups about school type such as general and vocational high school. Data which were used to determine the students? ideas about their own schools? safety were gathered from a questionnaire which was built up by the resarcher. The questionnaire was divided up into four subdimensions: Pyhsical safety, physicological safety, social safety and facility/environmental safety. Frequency, percent, mean and standart deviation values were used in the analysis of students? ideas about safety subdimensions. For analyzing the significiant difference according to students? gender and school type, the independent samples T-tests results were used.At the end of the research, students? ideas related school safety were discussed and it was identified that students? ideas about social safety differed significiantly according to the gender. Boys have less social safety than girls. It was also identified that students? ideas related about physicological, social and facility/environmental safety differed significiantly according to the school type. Vocational high school students have less physicological, social and facilty/environmental safety compared to the general high school students.Keywords: School Safety, Student Safety, High Schools
