The power sources that high school administrators use (Afyonkarahisar city sample)

The purpose of this study is to determine at which level school administrators, who work in high schools in Afyonkarahisar in 2013-2014 academic year, use the power sources (legitimate, coercive, reward, charismatic and expert power). It is also aimed to find out whether teachers' opinions related to five power sources change significantly according to variables; gender, age, educational background, seniority and duration of service at school. The population of this descriptive survey type study which was carried out with quantitative method consisted of teachers working in public high schools in the city of Afyonkarahisar. The target population of the study consists of teachers working in public high schools in the city center. According to this study's results, high school administrators use legitimate power source the most, then in order expert, charismatic, reward and coercive power source. It was found out that the usage level of the legitimate, expert, charismatic and reward power was at "high" level; the applicability of coercive power was at "average" level. In the opinion of teachers about the level of legitimate and expert power, it was determined that there was a significant difference only in the variable of duration of service at school. There was a significant difference only in the variable of seniority about the reward power use. There was a significant difference in teachers' opinions regarding the level of use of charismatic power according to age and seniority. There was a significant difference in the variables of age, seniority and duration of service at school in terms of compulsive power use. Gender and educational background variables did not make a meaningful difference in the opinions of teachers regarding the level of use of school administrators' power sources.
