A study on personality characteristics of sportsman students who take education at secondary schools and dealing with team-plays, based on sport branches

In this study, it is aimed to examine personality characteristics of sportsmen students who take education at secondary school and dealing with team plays based on their branches and to make contributions to future studies and literature on this field.Population of this study includes provincial centre of Tokat and sample of the study is consisted of 331 sportsman students, including 113 female and 218 male students, who attend secondary school during 2007 ? 2008 education year. The investigation is a screening model. ?Eysenck Personality Questionnaire? is used in this study.First, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used in this study in order to define if data is compatible with normal distribution. As it is found that items included in the study scale has normal distribution, Student t test was used for comparisons considering sex and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is used for comparisons considering sport branches of more than two groups.According to the results of the study, it can be said that female sportsmen show higher neurotic tendencies than male sportsmen. The psychotic values of sportsmen studies in the branch of volleyball are found to be lower than the values of sportsmen, who are active in other branches. When the neurotic scores are examined, it can be seen that the highest average scores belong to people that are active in the branch of football. When comparing the branches within themselves according to sexes, the neurotic score averages of female basketball players have been found higher than the neurotic score averages of male basketball players; whereas in the branch of volleyball, the psychotic values of male sportsmen have been found higher than that of female volleyball players. However in the branch of handball it is the female sportsmen, whose psychotic values have been found higher than that of male handball players.When comparing female sportsmen according to their branches, it can be seen that the highest average in relation to psychoticism belongs to female students that are active in the branch of handball, whereas female sportsmen that are active in the branch of basketball show more introverted qualities than the female sportsmen, who are active in other branches. It can be said that female sportsmen playing handball show less neurotic qualities than the female sportsmen of other branches. When comparing our male sportsmen, the neurotic dimension was the only dimension, where a significant difference could be detected. Accordingly, it can be said that female sportsmen playing football show a higher neurotic tendency than the male sportsmen of other branches.
