Text genre awareness' in Turkish lesson program and textbooks in secondary school

The aim of the study is to reveal the position of 'text genre awareness" which is expected to be developed in the secondary school (5th-8th grade) Turkish courses. In this context, the Turkish Lesson Curriculum (TLC) for the 2018 is examined in terms of text genre awareness and how it is reflected to the students through activities/questions in Turkish lesson books of secondary school (5th-8th grade). In the TLC, learning outcome based on the text genre awareness and the genre of texts that the Program has given according to the classes are presented. The distribution of texts in Turkish textbooks by genres is discussed and activities/questions are evaluated within the framework of text genre awareness. The study compasses the Turkish textbooks for secondary school (5th-8th grade) which is published by Turkish Ministry of National Education. Document analysis method is used in our study which is a qualitative research. As a result of the study, it has been observed that text diversity is important in the TLC and that the learning outcomes support this diversity. Secondary School (5-8. Classes) textbooks included in Turkish course textbooks have also paid attention to the diversity of species and the appropriateness of class levels of the text genres. The activities/questions based on the text genre awareness were also included in the textbooks and were distributed according to the fields of learning. Considering the distribution of activities/questions based on text genre awareness according to learning areas; While writing and reading learning areas are given more space, it is seen that there are fewer activities/questions related to speaking, listening and watching learning areas. It can be said that the activities/questions based on the text genre awareness are not only at the level of knowledge and understanding but also in the application and analysis steps.
