Abstract (EN)

In this study, the interpretations of middle school 8th grade students about the meanings and symbols they attributed to arithmetic and geometry symbols were examined. This research is a descriptive research using scanning mode. The study group of the study is 120 secondary school 8th grade students studying in a public school in Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa province. An open-ended web form containing arithmetic and geometry symbols given by the researcher and the expert was used as the data collection tool. The analysis of the data was done by content analysis, one of the qualitative analysis methods. The findings obtained from the analysis of the data were grouped under two main headings: arithmetic and geometry. Looking at the findings, different, incomplete and misinterpretations of different symbols were observed. In addition, it has been determined that the interpretations made for geometry poetry are less than arithmetic symbols. It is thought that the results obtained from the research will contribute to the studies on symbols and mathematics education.
