Opinions of 8th grades about the factors being influence on gaining of the reading habit

Communication skills gain more importance day by day in todays world, the act of reading and the reading habit, formed by the continuity of this act, preserve being the key of social progress and personal development from past to present. It has been the subject of many researches and continues to be with this feature. All members of society are responsible for raising generations that read, understand, interpret and question what they read, and this goal will be realized with the cooperation and effort required by all social institutions. In this study, it is aimed to determine the opinions of 8th grade students about the factors that influence the formation of reading habits. The research is designed with phenomenologic method from qualitative research models. The study group of the study consisted of a total of 40 8th grade students studying at Abdurrahman İyigün Secondary School, Cumhuriyet Secondary School, Süleyman Demirel Secondary School and TOKI Secondary School in the Central district of Kilis province for the 2018-2019 academic year. The research data are collected by the researcher using semi-structured interview technique. In the interview, the students were asked what the role of various factors thought to have an effect on the formation of reading habits, and the obtained research data are analyzed using the descriptive analysis method, one of the qualitative data analysis methods. Students' views were gathered under the themes of "the individual, family, friend, teacher, Turkish lesson and media." As a result of the research, it is observed that in the formation of students' reading habits from the point of students, the sense of curiosity, interest in reading and love to read books; with regard to friends, setting an example for each other, suggesting books, exchanging books by telling each other about the books they read; with regard to family members, family members should set an example for their children, read books with them, buy books to them, take them to the library, have a library at home; with regard to teachers, teachers should set an example for their students in reading, introduce them to books, and recommend books to them; with regard to the Turkish course, the text books should consist of texts that are encouraging to read; with regards to the media, it has been reach the result that materials and activities that arouse enthusiasm and curiosity towards reading in the media are effective and some suggestions has been reached based on these results.
