The effect of the usage of interactive electronic book on the student's achi̇evement and motivation in the middle school sci̇ence course

Nowadays, while classical teaching methods have been replaced by modern teaching methods, we see that technology usage has also increased. Many studies have demonstrated that the use of different educational technological tools and equipments positively affects students' achievements and motivations. However, it is seen that in many schools where the Interactive Electronic Book (EEK) design has not been used sufficiently in science education, it is still trying to gain abstract science concepts with classical books. Through the Interactive Electronic Books designed in different fields, very rich content is offered to the students independently of time and space. In our country, it is seen that there are not enough Interactive Electronic Books designed for the Science course acquisitions. In this regard, within the scope of this thesis, as an alternative learning source where students can repeat topics, acquire new information and evaluate themselves independently of time and space, an interactive Electronic Book has been designed. It has been investigated to what extent this book may affect students' achievements and motivations. In the research, "Pre - Post-Test Control Group Semi-Experimental Pattern" model was used. The sample of the study consists of 35 students who study in a seventh grade in a private secondary school in the province of Buca in Izmir. The class of 18 students was determined as the experimental group, and the class of 17 students was determined as the control group by means of an independent appointment. In addition to the methods and techniques used in the classroom in the experimental group, the web page where the Interactive Electronic Book hosted is visited, and the activities in the control group are asked to carry out the studies required by the science curriculum. In this thesis, in order to determine the changes on the students' achievements; "Solar System and Beyond - Academic Achievement Test (GSÖBT)" and the changes on the students' motivation "Motivation Scale toward Science Learning" were used. According to the findings obtained in the research, a significant difference was found between the scores of the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group in the Academic Achievement Test. When both group students' scores of motivation toward science learning were compared, the experimental students' motivation was significantly different than the students in control group. The results obtained from this thesis study revealed that the use of Interactive Electronic Books in the teaching of Science course increases students' academic success and motivation towards Science course.
