Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to determine the problems encountered in English language learning-teaching according to secondary-high school students and English language teachers. In the study, descriptive research method has been used in general screening model. The target population of the study consists of 24.850 secondary school students, 16.339 high school students studying at secondary and high schools in Sultanbeyli district of İstanbul and 143 English language teachers working in the same district. And the sample of the study consists of 126 English language teachers and 1261 secondary school students, 1201 high school students chosen with the method of proportionate sampling. As data collection tools, a student questionnaire that is adapted from the questionnaires developed by Doğan (2009), Şahin (2013), Altundiş (2006) and a teacher questionnaire adapted from the questionnaire developed by Ergüder (2005) have been used. In order to analyze quantitative data, collected from the study, "frequency analysis", "percentage analysis", "mean", "standard deviation", "independent samples t-test", "one way analysis of variance (anova)" and "tukey test" techniques have been used. Findings in the study are given below; 1. According to the secondary school students; the anger of the teachers towards students' mistakes, inadequacy of supplementary course materials and equipments, students' problems in comprehending the texts are the most influential factors affecting the problems encountered in the English language learning and teaching process. 2. According to the high school students; teachers' anger at students' mistakes, students' difficulty in speaking English, grammar oriented English courses, are the most influential factors affecting the problems encountered in the English language learning and teaching process. 3. According to secondary school English teachers; the lack of English classes and libraries at schools, inadequacy of technological resources, insufficient course review of students are the most influential factors affecting the problems encountered in the English language learning and teaching process. 4. According to high school English teachers; the lack of English classes at schools, not having chances to practice English for students, unattractive course books are the most influential factors affecting the problems encountered in the English language learning and teaching process. 5. There is a meaningful difference between the views of the secondary and high school students studying at different grades about problems encountered in English language learning and teaching. 6. There is a meaningful difference between the views of the secondary and high school students with different numbers of siblings about problems encountered in English language learning and teaching. 7. There is a meaningful difference between the views of the high school students studying at different types of schools are different about problems encountered in English language learning and teaching. 8. There is a meaningful difference between the views of the high school students whose mothers' occupations are different about problems encountered in English language learning and teaching. 9. There is a meaningful difference between the views of the English language teachers whose graduation levels are different about problems encountered in English language learning and teaching.
