Examination of the relationship between secondary school students' physical education and sports lesson compatibility levels and their NEED-supporting teaching style perceptions

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between secondary school students' physical education and sports course predisposition levels and their perceptions of need-supportive teaching style. The study was carried out in a correlational survey model. The data of the study are the physical education lesson predisposition levels of secondary school students and their perceptions of need-supportive teaching style in physical education and sports lessons. In the 2020-2021 academic year, a total of 326 secondary school students, 166 females and 160 males were included in the study (mean age 12.55±1.15). In the research, the data were obtained by using "the Need Supportive Teaching Style Scale for Physical Education" and the "Physical Education Predisposition Scale". In data analysis, descriptive statistical methods and non-parametric data analysis methods were applied. The findings showed that there was a moderate positive correlation between the physical education and sports course predisposition levels of secondary school students and their perceptions of need-supportive teaching style (p<0.05). In the study, it was determined that physical education and sports course predisposition levels and need-supportive teaching style perceptions did not differ according to gender and class variables. The total score of the students who are taking part in school sports teams, the perceived ability score for the physical education lesson, and The Need Supportive Teaching Style Scale for Physical Education involvement dimension were found to be statistically significantly higher than those who were not taking part in school sports teams (p<0.05). The results show that the students in the school team who believe that they can be successful in the physical education lesson have increased the perceived support from the teachers.
