Investigation of secondary school science students' motivation sources in science course

With increasing competition among students, efforts to enhance success have also increased. Regardless of the job and course, the motivation of individuals increase their productivity, success and personal satisfaction, and thus, individuals who believe in success and are confident are raised. This study was carried out to investigate the variables that affect secondary school students' motivation towards science learning, and the level of their motivation. The sample of the study consisted of 772 secondary school students studying in nine schools in Kırşehir city center who were selected through purposeful sampling. As data collection tools, Motivation Scale for Science Learning, developed by Dede and Yaman (2008), and demographic characteristics and self-discipline survey questions developed by the researcher were used. In the study, quantitative data were supported with qualitative data so that mix method variation was utilized. It is a survey study that was conducted with cross-sectional research design approach. The results of the study revealed that female students were more easily motivated than male students; students who do not have alcohol at home discipline themselves better than those students who have alcohol at home; students who do not take extracurricular courses had higher motivation for communication than those who take extracurricular courses; students who take social activity courses had higher motivation and self-discipline abilities than those who do not take such courses; and students who like individual study had higher motivation and self-disciplinary abilities than those who do not like studying their own.
