The evaluation of the visual art lesson applications of the secondary school students from the viev of graphical design

Art is an indispensable value in the education of human. While an individual is expressing his feelings and thoughts, he presents his creativity with effort. At schools, visual art lesson develops the student's ability of drawing, coloring, building, choosing, renewing, designing and commenting with the applications of graphical design. Within this effort, art education is a special field which has its own method and principals. The terms of graphical form should be used in a harmony in order that the design will be suitable for the aim. The allignment, balance, opposition, emphasizing, motion, image, proportion, closeness, repetition, rhythm and unity, which are the basic principals of design, are also valid for the graphical design. If the student learn these fundamental principles, he/she will be more dominant about the topic. In the first part of the study, problem statement, purpose, importance, limitations of the study were addressed. In the second part, art education, the necessity of visual arts, elements of graphical design, and their effects on creativity were examined. In the third part, the assessment of graphic design studies in terms of design elements were done. In the fourth part, the questionnaire performed with teachers, and students and its outcomes were analyzed. In this study, general survey model has been used. Data were obtained by survey research performed for 21 different class within four different secondary school in three districts of İzmir. The study was benefited from qualitative research technique. In visual arts class, the term "creativity" in art is given importance and the availability of providing special methods and techniques and updating the knowledge of graphical design is predicted. In this context, practical works were performed by using graphic design principles in visual arts class and assessments were made related to these works to reach conclusion. In conclusion of survey, it was determined that two and three dimensional works can be done by using visual design principles in the works performed by students. In addition, from the point of the artwork belong to the famous artists, it is concluded that students may form creative designs by using different methods and principles.
