Examination of measuremental estimation performance of secondary students

The aim of this study is to examine the measurement estimation performance of secondary school (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade) students according to some variables. The sample of the study consisted of 1140 students studying in six state secondary schools with different socioeconomic levels in Kırşehir in the 2022-2023 academic year. Relational survey model, which is a type of descriptive survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The researcher developed the 'Participant Data Collection Form' consisting of 24 questions and the 'Measurative Estimation Test' consisting of 22 questions to determine the measurement estimation performances. Looking at the results of the study, it was observed that the mean of the measurement estimates increased as the age and class level increased. It was found that students from high socioeconomic district schools achieved statistically significantly higher scores compared to middle and low socioeconomic district schools. In the results of the independent groups t-test, no significant difference was found between the scores according to gender and the variables of being alive and together with their parents. According to the variable of the person most interested in education, it was determined that the estimation scores of the students in the group of people who were interested in their education, except for their family members, were quite low. In general, as the education level of the parents increased, it was observed that the average of the students' estimations increased. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the scores of the students according to the level of associating mathematics with daily life, but when analysed according to their experiences of using ruler-compass, floor covering-wall painting, measuring liquid, it was seen that the students obtained very close and low estimation averages.
