The relationship between social emotional learning and selfesteem of the secondary school students

The aim of the research is to analyse the relationship between the social emotional learning and the self esteem of secondary school students. The research consists of five sections. These are; Introduction, Conceptual Framework, Methods, Results and Explanation, Conclusion Discussion and Recommendations. The research was carried out in 2011-2012 academic year on 150 students studying in 9 different secondary school affiliated to Istanbul Maltepe District Education Directorate. 90 female and 60 male students got involved in this research. In order to measure social emotional learning level of the students ,,Social Emotinal Learning scale; to determine the self-esteem level of the students, Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory and also for demographic characteristics, Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher were used in this research.The Social-emotional learning skills scale (SELSS) divided accross four subscales; communication skills, problem solving skills, coping with stress and self-esteem skills. Also Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory, which consists of 56 statements, was used in this research.The frequency tables and percentage of demographic characteristics were presented. Also, social emotional learning and self-esteem level of the students were tested; analysis on whether those variables diversified or not was carried out according to demographic characteristics and the relationships among them were analysed. The acquired data were analysed and interpreted by SPSS program.As a result of Pearson?s Correlation Analysis between the `Social-emotional Learning Scale? sub-dimensions and `Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory? significant relationship was founded in a positive way.Results reveal that there is a significant relationship in a positive way between social-emotional learning and the self-esteem levels of the secondary school students.
