Examination of listening texts in secondary school Turkish textbooks in context of critical listening criteria

Listening is at the core of the four basic skills, but it is one of the skills most frequently used by secondary school students in daily life, within the possibilities provided by technological opportunities. The fact that listening has both a physical and a cognitive side gives teachers a more sensitive mission in order to gain this skill to students. For these reasons, the acquisition of acquisitions related to the said skill will help students achieve success in both daily life and school life. The fact that individuals have an inquiring and interpretive attitude to the stimuli they listen to since the secondary school level makes critical listening an important part of the listening skill. In this regard, it is obvious that the Turkish course and the listening texts in the Turkish textbook should have a feature that guides students to critical listening. The critical listening achievements that students can acquire based on these texts will enable them to analyze the listening stimuli they encounter and to think critically about them. For this reason, it becomes important whether the texts are suitable for critical listening criteria. In this study, it has been tried to reveal to what extent the listening texts in the secondary school Turkish textbooks used as the primary source during the lesson have the criteria of critical listening and to what extent these texts can help students gain the ability to approach the materials they listen to with a critical attitude. In this study, in which the qualitative research approach was adopted, the document analysis method was used to collect the data.A total of 32 listening texts were analyzed, 8 from each level from the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. It was seen that 18 of the analyzed listening texts met the critical listening criteria and 14 of them did not. This result showed that although the majority of the listening texts met the criteria for critical listening, there was an undeniable number of texts that did not meet the criteria.
