Evaluation of facial aesthetics in patients need orthodontic treatment

The aims of this study were to evaluate the facial aesthetics of patients and to investigate the relationship of facial aesthetics to the orthodontic problems. The study sample consisted of 250 patients who applied to the Orthodontics Department of Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Dentistry. Standardized photographs were taken of all patients before orthodontic treatment. On these photographs, facial features of the patients were evaluated in detail based on 11 different facial regions, and the obtained data were examined using statistical analysis. The scales named Fitzpatrick phototype classification, Glogau wrinkles classification, and facial skeletonization/fullness classification were used in the evaluation of the photographs obtained in the research and in evaluating the soft tissue. The Forehead, Eyebrows, and Eyes Analysis Checklist was used in the evaluation of forehead and eye structures. The Nasal Analysis Checklist was used in the evaluation of nose structures in the research. The Lips analysis, teeth analysis and chin analysis were used in the evaluation of lip, tooth and jaw in the study. Participants in the study consisted of 158 girls and 92 boys ages 7-38. 36.4 % of these had Class I, 53.2 % of these had Class II, and 10.4 % of these had Class III molar relationship. 57.8% of the individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 had a flat forehead profile, while in the patients between the ages of 15 and 18, this rate was 28.5%. Some skeletal and dental malocclusions and facial characteristics are related to each other. In our study, we evaluated these correlations. Some facial features are more common in specific patient groups. If dentists, especially orthodontists, know which facial features are more common in which patient group, the treatment plan can be modified to improve facial appearance and not only dentition.
