The assessment of the orthodontic treatment outcomes using by icon and ABO-MGS indexes

Aim: The aim of present study is to evaluate the treatment outcome of patients treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Atatürk University using by ICON and ABO-MGS indexes and to examine whether there is correlation between these two indexes. Additionally, it is aimed to evaluate the effects on treatment outcomes according to chronological age at the beginning of the treatment, gender, whether or not tooth extraction for treatment, duration of treatment and sagittal dental anomalies. Material and Method: The material of this study consists of after orthodontic treatment models and panoramic radiographs of 300 cases treated by specialist students and archived after 2012. For the assessment of statistical analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test was used to evaluate the homogeneity of data distribution, Chi-square Test was used for the effect of the examined parameters on the treatment outcome and to assess the relationship between MGS and ICON indices in terms of success criteria, Spearman's Rank Correlation Test was used to determine the correlation between MGS and ICON scores. Results: As a result, when the treatment results were evaluated with the ABO-MGS index, the parameters examined were not affected on the treatment result, whereas when the treatment results were evaluated with the ICON index, the duration of treatment and dental anomalies on the anteroposterior direction were found to have an effect on the treatment results. There was a linear relationship between the MGS and ICON results in terms of success criterion. Statistically significant correlation was found between MGS and ICON scores. Conclusion: A statistically significant correlation was found between the ABO-MGS and ICON indexes in evaluating the outcome of treatment. The evaluation of the results of orthodontic treatment with orthodontic indexes allows the treating physicians to improve themselves and the treatment results can be objectively evaluated.
