Investigation of the effect of orthognathic surgery on aesthetic and estimated age perceptions

The aim of this study was to examine the changes in aesthetic and estimated age perceptions before and after surgery in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery and to determine the differences in these perceived changes according to the patient's skeletal status, gender, changes in cephalometric values, and the profession of the evaluator. Patients who underwent orthognathic surgery to correct dentofacial deformity in Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic between 2013-2022 were included in this retrospective study. 33 female and 17 male (10 Class 2, 40 Class 3) patients were included in the study. The preoperative and postoperative sixth-month photographs obtained from the patients were evaluated in different parameters by the evaluators consisting of 19 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, 44 Dentists, 125 Non-Occupational Individuals, and 1 Artificial Intelligence algorithm. In addition, anthropometric measurements and cephalometric analysis results (preoperative and postoperative) of the patients and the data obtained from the evaluators were compared using statistical methods. As a result; It has been observed that orthognathic surgery changes the facial age of the patient and has a positive effect on facial aesthetics. In the evaluation of the results of orthognathic surgery, Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery specialists had different perceptions compared to dentists and individuals from other professions. When the changes in the estimated age before and after the surgery were examined, the artificial intelligence did not differ statistically from the other groups.
