The effects of sports on socialisation of orthopedically handicapped individuals

SUMMARYThe individual who?s born as a biological organism, unites with the community via socialisation. Hence the individual learns to live within the society he?s in. Thus, socialisation is important for the individual. The importance of the socialisation for the community is that it provides the continuity of the community. Individual and the community continuously affect each other. The characteristics of this interaction is defined by the socialisation.Socialisation of the individual can be understood as the personalisation of the norms, faith, values and behaviour of the society he lives within. Therefore we can say that socialisation process is both an individualisation and an integration process. The infant should individualise as a person and acquire its own identity. Meanwhile s/he should integrate with his environment, community and culture. Besides, there should be healty environments which provides for the balanced development of the individual?s tendencies.Socialisation begins with the family. Furthermore this integration process continues with the socialisation tools like school, friends and mass media. Sportive activity is also an important tool for the socialisation of the individual.Sportive activities affects the individuals physical, psychological and social development and the importance of the sportive activities is obvious for the individual?s health and the communities health. Sports is a popular activity in all communities. Part of the individuals does sports for competition, whereas the others does for good physical health. Unfortunately the handicapped individuals often refuses to do sports or they can?t find means to do sports.The physically hadicapped people has the largest population among the overall hadicapped population. Physical handicapped persons are orthopedically hadicapped or chronically ill.In our study, the effect of the sportive activities to the socialisation of the orthopedically hadicapped individuals who is playing wheelchair basketball is researched.The general information section of our study consists of three subsections which complement each other in a systematical integrity. The first part named ?Handicapped in general? contains the definition of being hadicapped, the sorts and causes of handicaps. The second part named ?Socialisation? contains the definition and the concept of socialisation, process of socialisation, phases of the socialisation, tools of socialisation and the biological foundations of the socialisation are explained in separate captions. The third part named ?Sportive Activities and Socialisation? contains the definition and the scope of the sports, the effect of the sports on the individuals, sports and the society, sports and the socialisation. In the fourth part named ?The effect of sports on socialisation of orthopedically handicapped individuals? the subjects sports as a tool of treatment, sports as a tool of treatment for orthopedically handicapped individuals, orthopedically handicapped people in our country are explained.The explanations so far is stressing the importance of the sportive activities on the socialisation. The main goal in our study is trying to show that the sportive activities is one of the most important socialisation factors in the socialisation process which is a kind of adaptation process.In the theoretical part of our study, the documentary sources are compiled, and the application part consists of a public survey. In the ampirical study part, the survey data is examined using SPSS 12.0.In the theoretical part of our study, the effect of the sportive activities on the socialisation process is obvious. The statistical outcome of the survey is also similar. Thus we can say that sportive activities is an effective tool for the socialisation.
