-From Ottoman to the Republic- a scholar of Biga: Mustafa Lutfi Effendi and his estate documents

Abstract (EN)

Without a doubt, one of the heaviest consequences of 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian war was the gradual immigratons of Muslim and Turk populations that were under torment after the '93 War. Among the people who had to leave their homeland because of the war, because of which it is expected that almost one million people immigrated, there were Mustafa Lutfi Effendi who immigrated at young ages from Akyar village, Suhumen town in Bulgaria to Celtik village, Biga district, in Canakkale and his family. Mustafa Lutfi Effendi from Biga, was born in 1297/1881 in Shumen Akyar village as Koca Ismail and Meryem Hanım's son. After he lived a part of his childhood in Celtik, he is sent to Darussafaka in Istanbul, where orphans have education, by the village community to recieve his education. Along with that, he had a madrassh education, after he completed his 15-16-year-long education life, he returned to Biga in his thirties in order to execute his mission. Mustafa Lutfi Effendi lived as a teacher and imam-hatip, apart from that these official duties, he served his village and his surroundings diversely. Mustafa Lutfi Effendi, who made an effort to continue to live in lines of the Qur'an and Sunnah, and who lived out his life to learn, to teach, and to serve, was a secret Ottoman scholar. He improved himself very well in terms of the time and area he lived in, and left a rich library, sermon notes and comiled-copied works behnd. At the same time, he has been being in close contact with scholars in the area where it is, almost he made a huge contribution to continue and revive the knowledge activities by making circle around. Thus, he has become a recognized face with his work, the students he aducated and the guidance actvities. Mustafa Lutfi, whose both personality and knowledge are respected profoundly by the people, passed away on January 17th 1964 in Celtik village.
