Abstract (EN)

After the Renaissance revolution in Europe and Gutenberg's printing press invention; the increase in capital stock and literacy rate, the development of trade and the concern for finding new markets for the manufactured products have played an important role in the development of advertising. Advertising initially made progress with the invention of the printing press thereby with the creation of flyers and wall posters. It is known that its real existence started with the birth of the press, in other words newspapers. In order to describe the history of advertisement in Turkey, first the Ottoman period and then the Republic period has to be analysed. In the Ottoman Empire, upon requirements, the first advertisements were made by brokers, street vendors and peddlers, same as in the West,by the methods of screaming or use of other tools whichever might catch the attention. Even though the examples of advertising started to increase with the development of printing opportunities in the 18th century, the cultural structure of the Ottoman society, wars, technical deficiencies and the oppressive structure in general caused many problems since the history of the development of advertising until the Republic period. Problems continued after the proclamation of the Republic as well. In this study, the adventure of printed advertisements and announcements in the process of transition from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic was explained by touching upon the problems.
