An example of the charitable women sultans of the Ottoman Empire: Hurrem Sultan

Hurrem Sultan was taken captive by the Crimean Tatars. Then, when Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent was the prince, Hurrem Sultan was a gift to the palace. She was taken as concubine by Sultan Suleiman's wife Hafsa Sultan. She received many trainings in the palace. Five sons of Sultan Suleyman (Mehmed, Abdullah, Selim, Bayezid, Cihangir) and his daughter Mihrimah's mother is Hürrem Sultan. In the first part of the study, the life and family life of Haseki Hürrem Sultan were emphasized. Her letters to Suleiman the Magnificent were mentioned. Return to Istanbul from Edirne near to her death, the upset of the people who hear of the discomfort, death and tried to explain the items left behind. In the second part; philanthropy and foundation concepts, some philanthropic women have been explained. In later chapters; The Külliye and district, which are named after Hürrem Sultan, and the foundations they built, contain information about these works. The complex, consists of a hospital, a soup kitchen (imaret), a madrasah, a primary school and a mosque. Most of these works were built by Mimar Sinan, who later became architect. The hospital has been called many until the present day. It was called as Haseki prison by the people. Here, for some time, the elderly and women in need of care remain. It was aimed to treat mentally ill patients at the age used as Bimarhane. This building served as a prison of Nisa. Primary school, the aim of this study is to enable the children to receive religious education in a high quality way. The pool in the garden is intended as a playground for children. In the building where the soup kitchen(imaret) and the madrasa existed, the highest salary was given to the scholars. As it is understood, this application is an indicator of how much importance is given to education. Imaret in al-Quds (Jerusalem), in the last section of our work, which includes information about the hammam(bath) and the fountain in Istanbul, the works of Haseki Hürrem Sultan have been included in the adds with the documents obtained from the archive. In addition to the charity works which Haseki Hürrem himself founded on her own behalf, she also had charity works with her husband, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, for his young sons who died at a young age. The great genius Mimar Sinan Şehzadebaşı Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque and Selimiye Mosque, which are their apprenticeship and foremanship and mastership works, are the works that Mimar Sinan build on behalf of Haseki Hürrem Sultan's family. These masterpieces of Mimar Sinan, who shared the same period with Hürrem Sultan's family, serve as the centers that decorate all over Turkey even today.
