Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to examine fruit growing, production and the use of fruits in socio-cultural areas in Ottoman society. The main sources of the study are the transcriptions of agricultural works written during the Ottoman period translated into modern Turkish. In addition, previous academic studies on Ottoman fruit growing and production were examined and original contributions were made to the gaps in the literature on Ottoman fruit growing. In this way, fruit growing techniques, types and varieties of fruits grown during the Ottoman period, and fruits evaluated in a wide range from palace cuisine to public markets, from foreign trade to art were analyzed in terms of both economic and cultural aspects through folkloric elements. In this study, it has been seen that fruit growing in the Ottoman State was not limited to agricultural production but was intertwined with the social, cultural and artistic life of the period. In addition, planting preferences, fertilization, pruning and preservation methods applied in fruit growing techniques are similar to today's practices and provide a guiding model that exemplifies sustainable agricultural planning approaches in today's current fruit growing.
