Courtyard in the sultan mosques in Ottoman architecture

Abstract (EN)

The mosques are place of worship in the center of İslamic societies life, Friday, funerals, eid and time honored prayers. Almost all types of mosques have a courtyard from the Şam Emeviye Mosque (a rectangular plan with a transverse development, multi column army type, four iwan, one domed one space, multi domed multi column, multifunctional zaviyah and central dome plan). In the Ottoman period, besides the inner courtyard of the mosques, outer courtyards / gardens which constitute a transition area between the city and the mosque which is important public area of the city were added. It is seen that this arrangement exists in all the salatin mosques built in the Ottoman Architecture 16th century called as Classical Ottoman Period as architectural style. The outer courtyard / garden continued to exist on the salatin mosques built from the beginning of the 19th century, but the inner courts disappeared over time. In the Ottoman geography, the main determinant of the cities where the muslim people live and the guides of the urban scale, the state affairs are seen and the management and the people come together, the Ottoman Empire 's "always open all the way" the examination of these structured structures that have reached to daylight by changing functions and forms constitute the basis of this research. During the article, the sultan mosques, which have been subject to countless studies, were dealt together with the courtyard constructions and the role of these architectural elements, which are complementary and companions of the mosques throughout centuries, in social and social life has been examined.
