Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, contemporary Turkish composers who have been using the Ottoman-Turkish Makam Music as compositional material are studied. To start with; the pitch system, genuine notation elements, such terms as 'makam', 'çeşni' and 'usûl' are defined. Basic makams, forms and usûls are listed and a brief history of polyphonic composition traditions in Turkey is outlined. Secondly, selected pieces from five composers; Hasan Uçarsu (1965) "Lamento", Özkan Manav (1967) "Taksim", Onur Türkmen (1972) "Hat", Oğuzhan Balcı (1977) "İstanbul Hatırası" and Sadık Uğraş Durmuş (1978) "1V4K", are analyzed in terms of use of Ottoman-Turkish Makam Music material. Lastly, methods employed by each composer are discussed comparatively in order to provide a general picture of the usage of Ottoman-Turkish Makam Music materials among today's composers in Turkey.
