Abstract (EN)

In this experimental study, we aimed that the investigation of the efficacy of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) usage on the healing of critical size calvarial bone defects in osteoporotic rats. In addition, biomechanical featuresof the bones in experimental groups were analyzed. In the study, 45 female Wistar rats were used. The study included five groups; Control group (A), Ovariectomy Group (B), Ovariectomy and PPI Group (C), Ovariectomy and LLLT Group (D) and Ovariectomy and PPI and LLLT Group(E). A critical size defect, in 5 mm diameter, was created in all subjects. Bone healing is determined by using histomorphometric measurement method. In addition, biomechanichal tests were used on rat femurs including tensile strength and three point bending tests. According to results, average new bone formation area is statistically significantly higher in Group E (p<0.05). According to results of three point bending and tensile tests, average tensile strength, stiffness, flexural modulus, maximal bending, strength and strain values are significantly lower in the ovariectomized and PPI groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, it has been observed that LLLT usages stimulates bone healing after surgery and PPI usage reduce biomechanical properties of the bone against to tensile and bending forces. Key words: Osteoporosis, proton pump inhibitors, low level laser therapy, bone defects
