Determination of organizational deviation accordingto generations in hotel industry

Abstract (EN)

In the world and Turkey, the increasing retirement age and economic reasons, such as technological developments, globalization, delaying retirement depends on the current global crisis, constitute an organizational structure in which four different generations work together. In the hospitality sector, factors such as individual qualities, values, ethical understanding and culture that accompany these generational differences may cause deviation behavior from time to time. In this respect, the research has a descriptive feature in order to evaluate whether the generational differences for the generation X and Y employed in the service sector are effective on organizational deviation behaviors. Organizational deviation behavior has been the subject of research in many disciplines such as psychology, sociology and education in international and national literature. There are limited number of studies conducted in the field of management in the national literature. Organizational deviation in hospitality businesses has not been examined in generations, in this respect, research is important for the field and literature. The determination of organizational deviation behaviors of generation X and Y within the accommodation enterprises where employees from all generations and dynamic structure are employed, reducing or even eliminating these behaviors will make an important contribution for the organizations. The sample of the study consisted of 5-star and 4-star two accommodations establishments located in İzmir. Data collection design was mixed method that questionnaire and semi-structured interview technique were used. As a data collection method, the questionnaire was prepared by using the "Organizational Deviation" scale which developed by Robinson and Bennett (2000), was applied to 145 hotel employees and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 managers to understand the generational differences in terms of management between July and September 2018. As a result of the qualitative research, it was found that there were significant differences in X and Y generation deviation behaviors. As a result of the analysis of the quantitative data, it was found that the average score of organizational deviation and personal deviation behavior of generation Y was higher than generation X.
