Abstract (EN)

When the original function of a historical building can no longer be sustained, reusing the building with a different function is one of the most effective and frequently used methods for its preservation and continued existence. In this study, five historical buildings that have been reused as hotels are examined. The aim of the study is to identify the spatial interventions made during the process of reusing historical buildings as hotels, and to analyze the effects of these interventions and changes on the original features of the buildings, as well as their compliance with contemporary restoration principles. To achieve this aim, the study was carried out in five stages. In the first part, the theoretical framework is presented, including literature on the conservation and reuse of historical buildings and hotel architecture. The second part explains the methodology of the study and introduces the five historical buildings reused as hotels. In the third part, data obtained from on-site observations and document analysis (such as restitution and restoration projects and reports) are shared, revealing the interventions and changes made during the restoration process of the selected case studies. In the fourth part, these interventions and changes are examined in terms of their impact on the original characteristics of the buildings and their alignment with contemporary restoration principles. The fifth part presents the results of the study, while the sixth part includes suggestions regarding the aspects that should be considered when evaluating the suitability of a historical building for hotel reuse and planning the necessary interventions.
