A possible effect of boric acid application onto bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats

Abstract (EN)

In the study, the effects of boric acid application were investigated on biochemical parameters of bone in ovariectomized rats. To this end, 12-14 weeks of age, with the average weighing 150-250g, non-pregnant, sixty female Wistar rats were divided into six groups. Three groups were bilaterally ovariectomized, 5 mg boric acid was given to one of these groups via gavage and the other group was received 10mg. Boric acid was applied only 5mg/kg to the 4th group and 10mg/kg to the 5th group. Pseudo ovariectomized group performed as control. After 8 weeks following the operations, boric acid treatment was started and continued for 20 days. Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, ALP, 1,25dihidroksi vitamin D, 25 hidroksi vitamin D, and PTH values were investigated from collected serum samples at end of the research. In the study, except from Ovariectomy+5 mg Boric acid treated group, serum Ca levels of the groups acid were significantly lower compared to the control group (p <0.05). 1,25 dihidroksi vitamin D levels of Ovariectomy and 10 mg boric acid treated group were lower compared to other groups (p <0.05); serum ALP levels in 5 and 10 mg of boric acid treated group were found higher than the control group (p <0.05). The results obtained from this study showed that eight weeks after the removal of the ovaries in rats did not cause a significant change in bone metabolism. In the study where different does of boric acid is applied, there is no evidence of any direct effect of the boric acid on the bone biochemical parameters. However, changes in Ca levels may suggest a relationship between the C and boron.
