Effect of surgical approach in ovariohysterectomy on postoperative and oxidative stress and pain in bitches In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of different surgical approach such as duration of surgery and incision length on postoperative stress and oxidative stress or pain in bitches. A total of 24 bitches which were brought to the our clinic for ovariohysterectomy, aged between 1 and 3 and weighed 25 ± 2.1 kg on average. Control group (n=12) was consisted of bitches that were operated by a experienced surgeon, while the dogs in experiment group (n=12) was operated by intern students. First blood sample was taken 24 hour before the surgery (T-24). The surgery was performed under general anaesthesia, whereas blood sample was taken during premedication. Blood sampling for further analysis was continued end of surgery (T0) and 30 minutes (T ½), one hour (T1), two hours (T2), four hours (T4) and six hours (T6) after surgery. Modified Melbourne Pain Scale was used for the evaluation of pain. Same anaesthesia, operation and blood sampling procedures were used in both control and experiment groups. Incision length and duration of surgery were recorded. It was observed that the concentrations of serum cortisol did not show any significant diffference 24 hour before surgery in control and experiment groups, while the concentraitons of serum cortisol measured at other times were higher in experiment group than those detected in control group (p<0.001). When the total antioxidant status and total oxidant status were evaluated, it was found that there was no statistical difference in and between groups. Although no statistically significant difference was found between the OSI values in the control and experimental groups, OSI values started to decrease at the first and fourth hour after the surgery in the control and experimental groups, respectively. According to the modified Melbourne pain scoring system, pain scores were not statistically different in the control and experimental groups and between the groups. In conclusion, it was found that the increment of concentrations of cortisol might be related to duration of surgery and incision length and affect the oxidative stress, however ovariohysterectomy is safely performed by intern students, when postoperative pain was evaluated.
