Effect of lidocaine on postoperative and oxidative stress and pain in ovariohysterectomized dogs

Abstract (EN)

In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of intraperitoneal and incisional sprayed lidocain on postoperative stress, oxidative stress and pain in ovariohysterectomized dogs. Dogs were randomly divided into control (n=12) and experiment (n=12) groups. Control group was received sprayed 0.9 % NaCl to ovaries, uterine broad ligaments, cervix uteri and left, right, cranial and caudal parts of abdominal cavity and finally incision side, whereas lidocaine 50% diluted by 0.9 % NaCl was sprayed in experiment group. Venous blood samples were collected before sedation, end of surgery, ½ , 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours after surgery to measure the concentrations of serum cortisol, total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS). Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated by the determination of the rate of TOS/TAS. Modified Melbourne Pain Scale was used to score pain. The concentrations of cortisol did not differin control group, whereas it was seen that cortisol increased during 2. hour and decreased after 4. hour in experiment group (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between groups. It was observed that TAS did not differ in groups was well as between groups. The concentrations of TOS did not show any significant difference in control group, whereas values were high as compared the values detected before sedation and the highest value was determined at 1 hour after surgery in experiment group (p<0.05). Moreover, the TOS detected at 1 hour after surgery was higher in experiment group than those detected in control group (p<0.05). The rate of OSI did not differ at all calculated times in groups and between groups. It was found that the pain scores increased until 4 hour after surgery and remained stable (p<0.001), whereas it increased until 1 hour after surgery and remained stable in experiment group (p<0.001).The pain scores in experiment group were lower than those detected at 2 (p<0.05), 4 (p<0.05) and 6 (p<0.05) hours after surgery in control group. In conclusion, it was stated that the intraperitoneal and incisional lidocaine treatment was effective on management of postoperative pain, however further studies are needed to observe the oxidative stress during postoperative process.
