Effect of self regulated learning on 5th grade students' academic achievement and scientific process skills

The purpose of this research is searching the scientific process skills and the academic achievement of students of fifth grades in science and technology education by using self regulated learning education in the subject of ?the heat effects matter? in the unit ?change in matter?.The study, half experimental method that includes pre-test and post-test controlled group was used. The sample of this study consisted of 53 students getting education in Güneysu IMKB Primary School in the academic year 2011-2012. There are 27 students in the experiment group and 26 students in the control group. In the experiment group, during three weeks, the lessons were studied according to the self regulated learning education. On the other hand, in the control group the lessons were studied based upon the activities in the course book.Achievement Test, Science Process Skills Test, The Strategies of Motivation Questionnaire in Learning and Interview were gathered. The obtained data were evaluated by using SPSS program. In the analysis of quantitative data t tests and method of ANCOVA were used. The qualitative data were subjected to content analysis.The findings of the research showed that the academic success of the students? in the experimental group were higher than control group students? success. Findings of study showed that science process skills of students? in the result of application. In the same way, it was seen that self regulated learning improved students? intrinsic goal orientation, self-efficacy for learning beliefs and performance scales and critical thinking, meta cognitive self-regulation strategies. In the result of interview, it was also seen that the experimental group students? expressing concepts and explaining events were efficient. Likewise, the experimental group students? states were more successful to get touch with the daily life.Keywords: Science and technology, heat and temperature, self regulated learning, science process skills, motivational beliefs and learning strategies.
