Evaluation of plant product use data of special hospitalist hospital inpatients

A retrospective study was conducted investigating the plant / herbal products used by hospitalized patients. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the herbal products on the surgical procedure, the pregnancy process, the general condition of the patient, and to determine and evaluate the correct usage rates. Information about the patients were collected from the hospital's surgical, obstetrics and neonatal intensive care services. Approximately 40 questions were asked. Information was evaluated by using Mcrosoft Excel program. The number of people surveyed is 225 people. Most of the participants were women (95%). Thirty-nine patients from the surgical service, 66 from the neonatal intensive care unit and 128 from the obstetrics department attended the survey. The average age of all participants was 36 years. 57% of the patients (128 people) used herbal products. When all services were considered, 128 people used 46 different herbal products. Herbal products were mainly used for cold-flu (31%), digestive system (22%), weight control (16%). The sources of information and advice on plant products are 24% TV, 23% internet and 14% neighbor. The rate of correct use according to the evidence-based effects of the plants is 58.5%. Before the surgery, 23 different herbal products were used by 51 people (32%). A large proportion (93%) of these uses had the potential to affect the surgical procedure. In the pregnancy period, 63 people (32%) used 31 different plant / herbal products. 37%. Training and awareness-raising activities on plant / herbal product use are required. The necessary steps should be taken to inquire and evaluate this information in the hospital. The community should be informed about public spots, brochures and seminars on plant / herbal product use.
