The program model supporting interpersonal communication skills for gifted students

The purpose of this study is to develop the Program Model for Supporting Interpersonal Communication Skills for Gifted Students in order to increase the interpersonal communication skills of gifted students and to examine the effects of this program model on online and offline communication skill levels of the students. ADDIE; Instructional design model is used for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation to create the infrastructure of the program model within the scope of the study. "Communication" and "Social Media Competence" scale tools were applied gifted students studying at İzmit Science and Art Centers in 2019-2020 academic year to determine the participants. Experimental and control groups of 16 people were formed with the random sampling method among adolescents having low social media and communication skills and who are 13-18 years old. The communication program with 14-session was developed within the scope of the research. The communication program developed is called ÖYKİDEP (The Program Supporting Interpersonal Communicatıon Skills for Gifted Students). 14-session ÖYKİDEP program was applied to the experimental group, and studies were carried out on different subjects for the control group. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in data collection and data analysis processes, and the research has been patterned in a mixed model. Surveys, observations, diaries, qualitative data forms, video recordings and interviews were used to collect data. "Communication" and "Social Media Competence" scale tools were applied as a pre-test two weeks before the program implementation, a post-test after the completion of the program, and a follow-up test eight weeks after the last session in order to determine whether the effect of the program was permanent. "Friedman" and "Kruskal Wallis" tests were used for intragroup comparisons, while "Mann Whitney U" test was used for intergroup comparisons. The results were analyzed in the SPSS 22.00 program. The findings obtained in the study revealed that ÖYKİDEP model increased the communication skill levels of the adolescents in the experimental group. This increase was found to be permanent through the follow-up test. It was observed that there was no significant difference between the communication and social media efficacy scale scores of the adolescents in the control group obtained by pre-test, post-test and follow-up test measurements. The findings were discussed and recommendations for future studies were presented.
