Abstract (EN)

Color and texture are fundamental elements in ceramic art that enhance the expression of form. While color emerges through the chemical and physical reactions of the material during the firing process, texture defines the perceivable physical characteristics of the surface. This study explores the alternative effects of color and texture on ceramic surfaces using ignimbrite as a raw material. Ignimbrite, a volcanic-origin material, functions as a natural pigment on ceramic surfaces due to its iron oxide and silicate mineral content. In this study, ignimbrite sourced from the Kayseri-Tomarza region was utilized to create color and texture effects on the surfaces of unique two- and three-dimensional ceramic forms. The ceramic forms underwent an initial bisque firing at 900 °C, followed by the application of ignimbrite pigment, which was sprayed onto the surface before a second firing at 1200 °C. As a result of this process, ignimbrite was observed to create pointillistic textures on ceramic surfaces while providing a natural variation in color transitions. Additionally, the unique forms examined within the framework of the concept of cycles emphasize the transformation process of the material, as well as its aesthetic and conceptual depth in ceramic art. This study highlights the potential of ignimbrite in ceramic applications while contributing to the exploration of alternative surface treatments using natural materials.
