Mathematics teaching with flipped classroom model in the distance education during the pandemic

The new coronavirus, which emerged in China in 2019, spread to other countries in a short time and turned into an epidemic pandemic. Countries have taken precautions according to the epidemic conditions, and one of the areas affected by this situation has been education systems. Due to the pandemic, face-to-face education had to recess in the Turkish Education System, and distance education was started at all levels throughout the country. This research was carried out to evaluate the contribution of a mathematics teaching activity designed by incorporating the flipped classroom model in the distance education process, to students' learning during the pandemic period, additionally to reveal the opinions of the participants about this process. Flipped learning is a teaching method in which the lecture is carried out outside the classroom before the lesson, and focused on practices instead of lectures in the classroom. The action research design was used in the research. The study was carried out with participants from seventh grade students in the center of a town in a city in the Black Sea Region during the 2020-2021 academic year. The participants were first trained with the flipped classroom model for 12 weeks. In this process, 12 different lesson plans for each week were prepared, and 16 lesson videos were prepared and shared with the students. Lesson videos were shared on the YouTubeTR platform, and the lesson practices were held online through EBA and Zoom applications. At the end of the process, 25 students were interviewed about their opinions about the process. Lesson videos, weekly lesson plans, student products and student interviews were the data of the research. According to the findings of the research, the students expressed a positive opinion about the flipped classroom model and especially the availability of lecture videos from the internet at any time was the most common idea of the participants. It has been observed that the flipped classroom model supports the learning of students in the distance education process. As a result, it is suggested that the flipped classroom model can be applied not only in face-to-face education, but also in differentiated learning environments with changing conditions, and that such studies can be carried out to support the education process by enriching it.
