Evaluation of self-care power and quality of life of adolescents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during the pandemic period

During the coronavirus pandemic, when adolescents with T1DM are affected in every way, self-care behaviors and quality of life may also change. The aim of this study was to investigate the self-care power and quality of life of adolescents with T1DM under pandemic conditions. The population of the descriptive and relationship-seeking type study consisted of adolescents with T1DM between the ages of 13-16 who applied to the Pediatric Endocrinology outpatient clinic of Dr. Sami Ulus Obstetrics, Child Health and Diseases Training and Research Hospital. In the study in which 118 adolescents participated; 'Participant Information Form', 'Self-Care Power Scale' and 'Kiddo-KINDL Quality of Life Scale' was obtained by using. In the analysis of the collected data, descriptive statistical methods were used with SPSS-22.0 package program. The relationships between the scale and sub-dimensions scores of the participants were examined by pearson correlation and linear regression analyses. In our study, the relationship between the self-care power of adolescents and compliance with precautions in the pandemic, increase in the frequency of hand washing and change in diet was found to be significant (p<0.05). There was a significant difference the quality of life of adolescents and gender, compliance with precautions in the pandemic, increase in cleaning behaviors and frequency of hand washing, having problems in going to diabetes control, how diabetes management is, family communication, sleep duration and how diet are affected, difficulty exercising and diabetes allowing daily activities according to variables (p<0.05). The relationship between self-care power and quality of life of adolescents in the pandemic was also found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). After all; It is seen that the quality of life of adolescents with T1DM, who have high self-care power in the pandemic, is also high.
