The samples of 19-20. century civilian architecture in Pangaltı İnönü district

In 1800?s Pangalti, one of the 19 th. residential quarters of Istanbul, was a Frenc district planned as a residential area for the population working in Galata as a result of destructive fires at Pera. Pangalti has been an important quarter covering all phases of architectural developments due to the fact that the district has been affected by political, technological and economic changes and its physical structure has gradually changed over time. Under the studies, the historical and and physical development of Pangalti, which reflects all the marks of changes from the modernization period upto now, have been examined and civilian architectural samples from the 19 th and 20th centuries in an identified area of Inonu quarter have been scrutinized. The current situation of the area, which is called Elmadag in the modern day and used to be in the boundaries of old-Pangalti, has been identified with inventory studies in the field and inspections on single building and quarter scale. As a result of the studies, suggestions have been made as to the preservation and rehabilitation of the historical structure and it is has been aimed at establishing a regular archive for this area, where there was no detailed preservation plan before.
