Evaluation of the incidence of oroantral aperture after extraction according to the relationship of roots of maxillary premolar and molar teeth with sinus in panoramic radiography

Sinus membrane perforation after extraction of maxillary premolar and molar teeth is one of the complications encountered. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of postextraction sinus membrane perforation according to root-sinus relationship in panoramic radiographs of patients who applied to the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic of the faculty of dentistry for various reasons, and to evaluate the panoramic radiographs of cases with sinus membrane perforation. Materials and Methods: The patients who underwent tooth extraction were evaluated on panoramic radiographs. Results: A total of 1142 teeth were extracted in the study and sinus membrane perforation was observed in 31 cases after extraction. The incidence of sinus membrane perforation after tooth extraction was found to be 2.7%. In cases where sinus membrane perforation was observed after extraction, the origin of the first and second molar teeth was found to be significant compared to the third molar and second premolars. Results: Since sinus membrane perforation can be an observable complication after tooth extraction, the dentist must evaluate the panoramic radiography before extraction and check whether this complication occurs after extraction.
