ABSTRACTMaster ThesisDC MOTOR SPEED CONTROL WITH PIC MICROCONTROLLERÖmür AYDOĞMUŞFırat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Electrical Education2006, Page: 89In this study, closed-loop speed control of a DC motor which is used for a wide rangeof applications in industry has been realized. Therefore, a PIC micro controller based four-quadrant DC motor drive system has been designed. Firstly the DC-DC chopper circuit, theauxiliary circuits, interfaces and control circuits have been designed and built for providing avariable DC voltage to supply the DC motor. Drive control is performed by a general purposemicro controller (PIC16F877). The control circuit has been realized digitally and the controlprogram has been written in C programming language. The purpose of this study is to show that flexible, reliable and efficient PIC microcontroller based and closed-loop four-quadrant DC motor drive systems can be built at lowcosts. For this purpose, expected experimental results have been obtained which show theimplementation of the drive system for speed acceleration and deceleration, forward andreversal operation and braking of a prototype permanent magnet DC motor. In addition to theexperimental work, the dc motor drive system has been simulated using Matlab/Simulink, andthe simulation results have been compared with those obtained from experiment.Consequently, it has been shown that with this designed drive system closed-loop andfour-quadrant speed control of a DC motor can be accomplished efficiently in a wide speedrange. It has been also shown that the implemented drive system can give reasonable results ofspeed control for a DC motor.Key Words: DC motor, PIC microcontroller, PI, DC-DC chopper, four-quadrant control.
