Cost analysis of the buildings which retrofitted with shear wall and reinforced concrete casing methods-Example of Akşehir İHL

ABSTRACTThe big earthquakes that occured in our country in the last years caused lots of damages to the people and also the buildings. Because of this many buildings had to be rebuilt or retrofitted.92% of the country land of Turkey is on the earthquake line. So a great amount of money is needed for retrofitting the buildings here. One of the ways to use the the money, that is allocated from the poor country budget for this, profitably is to guess the cost of retrofitting the buildings according to the construction cost.In this project the cost of retrofitting with shear wall method and the cost of construction is compared. Because of the importance of the education in social life we choosed a highschool as an example building.First, some information is given about the cost of construction, retrofitting(in general) and the cost of retrofitting. Then the retrofitting of the choosen highschool building with shear walls is solved with ide pocket program. Shear walls which have to be added to the building, casings on the columns and the foundations needed under the shear walls are determined and finally cost of these is compared with the building sum.This research manifests that the building of the highschool costs 1 026 283, 00 YTL (by the 2007 prices) while the retrofitting of the same building with adding shear walls costs 535 230, 80 YTL (by the 2007 prices) and this means retrofitting cost is the half of the construction cost.
