The Results of culture antibiogram in perforating eye injuries

SUMMARY The factors which contribute with microorganism inoculation of eyes in traumatic injuries were evaluated in 56 cases admitted with perforated eye injuries at the department of ophtalmology in Dicle University Faculty of Medicine between 1.1.1997 and 1.9.1997. Age of the patients ranged between 1-58 years (mean: 14.39± 13.17 years) The mean duration prior to the admission time was found 32.9 ± 39.86 hours. Surgical management was performed at a mean of 9.5 ± 8.03 hours after admission. Preoperative profiactic antibiotic treatment was not given for nine cases. Preoperative culture materials were obtained from conjunctival smears and anterior chamber. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed The age and sex of the patients the type localization, cause, and size of the injury, intra oculare foreign body, uveal prolapsus, admission time and location of the cases, preoperative antibiotic usage and the culture results were recorded for all cases. Microrganism was isolated at anterior chamber or conjunctival smear from fifteen (26.7%) of 56 cases. The correlation between the culture results were found significant for the preoperative non antibiotic used cases and for those having been injuried by organic materials. Appropriate prolactic antibiotic usage was suggested for the cases with perforated eye injuries. The results were compared with the literature. 45
