Clinical Electrophysiological and Histomorphological Effects of Local Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin E Use in Peripheral Nerve Injury: Rat Model Objectives: We aimed to demostrate the effects of the combination of local Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E in the sciatic nerve incision repair model created in rats. Materials and methods: In our study, the right sciatic nerves of 40 rats were cut and repaired. Left sciatic nerves that were not intervented were evaluated as the sham group. The rats whose right sciatic nerve was operated were divided into 4 groups as control-4, control-8, treatment-4 and treatment-8 groups. These groups were divided into 2 groups to evaluate with histomorphological and clinical and electrophysiological experiments. A combination of 0,01 mg/kg Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E was administered locally to the rats in the treatment groups daily for 4 weeks. Rats were sacrificed after thermal plantar tests were performed at 4th and 8th weeks; and histomorphological and electrophysiological experiments were performed. Results: In the histomorphological examination, the number of myelinated axons increased significantly and the myelin structure was found to be closer to the sham group, especially when the treatment-8 group was compared with the control groups (control-4 p<0.0001, control-8 p<0.01). In electrophysiological examinations, latency times were found that it was statistically significantly lower in the treatment-8 group than in the control-4 group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on these evidences, it was found that the combination of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E locally used in peripheral nerve injury was effective in histomorphological and electrophysiological examinations.
