Retrospective examination of clinical and radiographic data of patients who were periodontal surgery treated

The main goal in teeth that have lost their support structures due to periodontal disease is to stop the progression of the periodontal disease and to regenerate the lost tissues. Recently, new flap designs have been proposed to minimize surgical travma. Current techniques have led to a reduction in postoperative complications and patient discomfort. The purpose of our study is to retrospectively evaluate and examine minimally invasive surgical techniques. Our study included 33 patients, 12 male and 21 female, between the ages of 20-59. In 33 patients, 43 regions were surgically treated and evaluated. In our study, there are 2 patient groups who underwent MIST/M-MIST and NIPSA surgery. While NIPSA surgery was applied to 28 regions, MIST was applied to 15 regions. Periodontal clinical measurements from patients (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], bleeding on probing index [BOP], probing pocket depth [PPD], clinical attachment level [CAL], depth of recession [RC], keratinized tissue [KT]], tip of papillae [PT]) were taken before and after the surgical procedure. Postoperative pain assessment (VAS) was performed. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Paired Samples T, Mann Whitney-U tests were used in the statistical analysis of the samples. In our study, CAL and PPD data showed a significant decrease in both groups. There was no statistical difference between the NIPSA and MIST groups in terms of VAS scoring. It was observed that papillary recession after surgery was significantly lower in the NIPSA group compared to MIST (p<0.05). The NIPSA group showed earlier results than MIST in the improvement of gingival inflamation. It can be said that both techniques are beneficial in attachment gain and reduce post-surgical travma. Further multicenter and more detailed studies with more patients and evaluated samples are needed.
