Comparision of Homocysteine Levels Preoperative and Postoperative in Patients Who Underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Introduction: Plasma homocysteine level increases in patients with chronic renal failure. Numerous studies have demonstrated that kidney function is one of the most important determinants of plasma homocysteine concentration. In this study we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the plasma homocysteine levels and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for patients with renal stones. Material and Methods: Twentythree patients with renal stones who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy were evaluated at 24. hours preoperative , 48 hours and 3 months postoperative. Blood samples were analyzed. Results: We calculated mean levels of plasma homocysteine preoperative at 24. hours as 15.8 umol/L (6.6-28.5 umol/L) and postoperative at 48 hours as 15.9 umol/L (8.7-45.6umol/L) and postoperative at 3. months 8,5 umol/L (4,5-21,4 umol/L). We determined that the levels of homocysteine postoperative at 3 months were significantly lower than the levels preoperative at 24 hours and postoperative at 48 hours. Conclusion: After percutaneous nephrolithotomy as the gold standart treatment of renal stones, plasma homocysteine levels decreased to lower levels than preoperative levels.
