ABSTRACTDETERMINING THE CHANGES IN LIFE STYLE OF PATIENTS FOLLOWINGA TRANSLUMINAL PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY (PTCA)AND CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY AND THE NECESSARY NURSING CAREThis research was carried out to determine the changes in life style of patients following aTransluminal Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) and Coronary Angiographyand the nursing care.The sample of the research was 155 patients, 106 of which had Coronary Angiographyand nine had PTCA hospitalized in Abant İ Baysal University Faculty of MedicinezzetResearch and Practice Hospital Cardiology Service with angiography and PTCA indicationbetween September 2005 and February 2006. The data were evaluated on the basis ofpercentage calculation.63,5% of patiens included into the study were male and mean age was found to be x=57.9 ± 11.3. Most of them were literate and/or graduated from primary school (68.7%); mostof them were married (82.6%); Almost one third of the patients were housewives (35.7%),40% didn?t work and 33.9% were retired and they were affiliated to SSK (Social SecurityInstitution) as social insurance (58.3%).It was found that 78.3% of the patients went to hospital due to complaints such aschest pain, asthma and fatigue; 89.6% had been permanently using drugs on the day they hadcoronary application; the patients who smoked (30.4%), quitted smoking (32.2%) and neversmoked (37.4%) displayed similar distribution at percentage; most of the patients (71.3%)never drunk alcohol; and when exercise and diet characteristics were taken into consideration,nearly half of the patients (49.5%) never trained physically while 20.0% regularly exercisedand they generally had a medium-fat and salty diet.It was found that, after three months the patients had coronary angiography and PTCAapplication, 73.9% had no change in their family life; 86.5% had no change in their dailylives; 51.3% had difficulties in tasks they used to accomplish; most of them followed the diet(73.9%) and medication treatment (90.1%); 55.5% carried our their activities; 15.3%completely changed their habit of smoking and quitted smoking; 4.5% lessened smoking and98.2% had no change in their habits of using alcohol, i.e. didn?t drink alcohol.Keywords: Angioplasty Transluminal Percutaneous Coronary, Coronary Angiography, LifeStyle, Nursing Care.
