Risk analysis of oil tanker accidents

In this study, marine accident data registered in GISIS (Global Integrated Shipping Information System) were investigated. The GISIS database includes accidents and events in the text format, that is hard to analyze systematically. Therefore, tables were formed by the assessment of acquired data and the systematic database was settled. The database includes the information of the accidents during the period between 1998 and 2010 in oil tankers. Size, time, main causes (if registered), environmental, economical and personal effects of accident and operational situation, flag, tonnage and location of ship were taken into account. The risk assessments were carried out using open FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) program for the incidents as collision contact, grounding and fire-explosion occurred in oil tankers. During the analysis, the Formal Safety Assessment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was used. Concentration of marine accidents in sea areas have been also identified by using Geographical Information System (GIS). According to the data of the incidents, high risk of accident types of the oil tankers are collision contact, grounding and fire-explosion, respectively. The main reason of the marine accidents is human error. % 77 of initial events Collision and % 81 grounding are due to human failures. The oil tanker incidents resulted in economical lost (%74), death or injury (%20) and environmental pollution (%6), respectively. It is determined by GIS that oil tanker accidents are more densely occurred at the seas around the north Europe.
