Examination of multi-crew licence integrated training system in pilot training: A case study

The system element that affects aviation safety the most is the human factor, and pilots are at the top of this list. Therefore, pilots, who must undergo effective training, are also subject to evolving licensing requirements due to advancements in technology. On the other hand, the increasing demand for air transportation and the growing need for pilots have led airline companies to seek new solutions to meet these needs quickly and efficiently. The aim of this research is to comprehensively examine the Multi-Crew Pilot Licensing (MPL) system, which has emerged in this context. The study was designed within a qualitative research paradigm, and a case study approach was employed to fully understand and explain the mentioned program. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the inductive thematic analysis technique. Based on the 193 codes obtained, six themes were identified. These themes include the objectives of the program; the advantages and disadvantages it offers for students, airline companies, and flight schools; how the MPL program is operated by airline companies and flight schools; the practical outcomes of the program; and potential future developments of the system. The program aims to meet pilot demand rapidly, train pilots suitable for new-generation aircraft, improve the efficiency of pilot training, and reduce associated costs. It was found that the program generally fulfills these objectives, although it also has certain disadvantages. It is anticipated that the program will continue to be implemented in the future.
