ABSTRACT MASTER OF SCIENCE THESIS DETERMINATION OF ELECTROCATALYTIC CONDITION OF PLATINUM GÜLSEN ARSLAN ÇUKUROVA UNIVERSITY SCIENCE INSTTITUE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT ADVISER : Prof.Dr. Mehmet ERBİL Year: 1998 Page: Juri : Doç.Dr. Birgül YAZICI : Doç.Dr. Halime PAKSOY In this study, the electrochemical behaviour of linearalkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) and methanol in 0.01 M Na2S04 at pH=3 and 8 on Pt electrodes has been investigated by potentiokinetic method. The anodic and cathodic semilogarithmic curcurrent-potential curves were obtained in 0.01 M Na2S04 and the same solution which contained 75 ppm LAS or 1M methanol at two pH between -1.8- 1.8V. The potential of 0.8 V have been determined by means of current potential curves and applied to Pt-Pt electrodes in 75 ppm LAS solution. The percentage of surface active material (PSM) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) remaining in solution after specified time periods (0-6hrs) were determined in which initial concentration of LAS was 75 ppm by using potentiostat. Same process repeated at different potentials for finding a suitable potential. The determined suitable potential is 0.7-0.6 V for electrooxidation at these condition. These potentials has been applied to the other prepared solution (50,25 ppm LAS and 1M methanol ) and variation of PSM-COD have been detected. According to the results, PSM decreased approximately to the % 78-45 range. The change of COD is as the same as PSM. LAS concentration decreased with the decrease of PSM at pH=8. The decrease of COD also observed in 1M methanol solution. Key Words: LAS,Methanol,Electrooxidation II
