Abstract (EN)
PREPARATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND INTERACTION WITHRADIATION OF POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)/KAPPA CARRAGEENANAND POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)/IOTA CARRAGEENANINTERPOLYMER COMPLEXES(Ph. D. Thesis)Ömer KANTOĞLUGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJuly 2006ABSTRACTA serious interpolymer complexes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with kappa-carrageenan (KC) and iota-carrageenan (IC) were prepared by solution castingmethod. The interpolymer complexes thus obtained were characterized by using X-ray flourescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ramanspectroscopy, diffrential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thesource and the metal salt type of KC and IC used in this study have been found tobe Euchema type and potasium salt by using XRF. FT-IR and Raman studiesindicates that there are hydrogen bonding interactions between the hydroxylgroups of PVA, KC and IC. There is no any indication on the hydrogen bondinginteractions of ester sulfate and ether groups of KC and IC with hydroxyl group ofPVA followed by FT-IR and Raman techniques. Surface energy components ofPVA/KC and PVA/IC interpolymer complex films have been calculated fromcontact angle measurements. Surface morphology of these films have beenexamined by AFM. Under the influencing of gamma rays, the effect of ionizingradiation (γ-rays) on the complex formation, thermal stability, surface energy andsurface morphology have been investigated. According to irradiation results, 17 %KC and IC contents of PVA/KC and PVA/IC interpolymer complexes irradiated to10 kGy have been found to be the best complexing ratio, the most thermally stable.Science Code : 201Key Words : Interpolymer complex, radiation, poly(vinyl alcohol),kappa carrageenan, iota carrageenan, hydrogen bondingPage Number : 177Adviser : Assoc.
