OPTIMIZATION OF POLYMER REACTORS AND INVESTIGATION OFPOLYMER MOLECUL WEIGHT CONTROL WİTH PID CONTROL(M. Sc. Thesis)Çetin RAUFGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSebtember 2006ABSTRACTIn our contamprorary, polymer technology has become an important part ofthe industry. To obtain a product with desired properties, system variablesand environment a conditions need controlling. Polymer molecular weightdistribution (MWD) effects polymer product properties, thus, to increase thequality of the polymer product a narrow distribution is needed. In thisstudy, temperature control of styrene polymerization reactor has beenstudied 30% of toluene ,70% of styrene and benzoil peroxide for inifiatorare used in the reactor. To obtain minimum (MWD) , optimal operationconditions were obtained using Hamiltonian optimization method. Theoptimal temperature was tried to hold on the optimal values with PIDcontrol system. PID control tuning parameters were found using differenttuning methods and the theoretically temperature control of the system wasinvestigated . From this analysis best PID control parameteres were chosenand used in the experimental control studies.Theoretical results and experiment data were compared and it was foundthat their is a deviation of 15% in number average molecular weight andPID controllers does not give the desired performance for temperaturecontrol.Science Code : 603.02.02Key Words : Styrene, PID, temperature control, batch reactorPage Number :146Advisor : Prof. Dr. Sebahat ERDOĞAN
